The many faces of Me!
Deanna's life......

I have EDS hypermobility type; in addition, I have fibromyalgia, and of course I have early onset osteoarthritis. Two years ago I saw a chiro for a couple of visits. He told me my right hip was pulled partially out of the socket, and when he put it back in, as soon as I stood up and put weight on it it slipped back out again. Other than not sitting indian style and trying to stand square and walk square, he couldn’t do anything because the muscles have developed to hold the joint oddly.

So. I was at my pain management office last week, and mentioned to them yet again how much my right hip and upper thigh were hurting. She felt all around my hip and moved it, and confirmed that it’s partially out of socket and that the muscles are very, very tight in that area. She gave me flector patches to cut up and place on the sore area.

Has anyone else had this issue? Any idea what the next step would be? From what I’ve read, it’s very possible that the only two options would be either a hip replacement to correct the joint itself, or to cut and resuture the muscles and place me in rehab to learn to walk and sit properly so that the muscles relearn how to work correctly. Anyone??

Your opinion and discussions are welcome!

LETTER TO PEOPLE WITHOUT CHRONIC PAIN:

Having chronic pain means many things change, and a lot of them are invisible. Unlike having cancer or being hurt in an accident, most people do not understand even a little about chronic pain and its effects, and of those that think they know, many are actually misinformed.

In the spirit of informing those who wish to understand …
… These are the things that I would like you to understand about me before you judge me…

Please understand that being sick doesn’t mean I’m not still a human being. I have to spend most of my day in considerable pain and exhaustion, and if you visit, sometimes I probably don’t seem like much fun to be with, but I’m still me– stuck inside this body. I still worry about school, my family, my friends, and most of the time - I’d still like to hear you talk about yours, too.

Please understand the difference between “happy” and “healthy”. When you’ve got the flu, you probably feel miserable with it, but I’ve been sick for years. I can’t be miserable all the time. In fact, I work hard at not being miserable. So, if you’re talking to me and I sound happy, it means I’m happy. That’s all. It doesn’t mean that I’m not in a lot of pain, or extremely tired, or that I’m getting better, or any of those things. Please don’t say, “Oh, you’re sounding better!” or “But you look so healthy!¨ I am merely coping. I am sounding happy and trying to look normal. If you want to comment on that, you’re welcome.

Please understand that being able to stand up for ten minutes doesn’t necessarily mean that I can stand up for twenty minutes, or an hour. Just because I managed to stand up for thirty minutes yesterday doesn’t mean that I can do the same today. With a lot of diseases you’re either paralyzed, or you can move. With this one, it gets more confusing everyday. It can be like a yo-yo. I never know from day to day, how I am going to feel when I wake up. In most cases, I never know from minute to minute. That is one of the hardest and most frustrating components of chronic pain.

Please repeat the above paragraph substituting, “sitting”, “walking”, “thinking”, “concentrating”, “being sociable” and so on … it applies to everything. That’s what chronic pain does to you.

Please understand that chronic pain is variable. It’s quite possible (for many, it’s common) that one day I am able to walk to the park and back, while the next day I’ll have trouble getting to the next room. Please don’t attack me when I’m ill by saying, “But you did it before!” or Oh, come on, I know you can do this!” If you want me to do something, then ask if I can. In a similar vein, I may need to cancel a previous commitment at the last minute. If this happens, please do not take it personally. If you are able, please try to always remember how very lucky you are–to be physically able to do all of the things that you can do.

Please understand that “getting out and doing things” does not make me feel better, and can often make me seriously worse. You don’t know what I go through or how I suffer in my own private time. Telling me that I need to exercise, or do some things to get my mind off of it¨ may frustrate me to tears, and is not correct if I was capable of doing some things any or all of the time, don’t you know that I would? I am working with my doctor and I am doing what I am supposed to do. Another statement that hurts is, “You just need to push yourself more, try harder…” Obviously, chronic pain can deal with the whole body, or be localized to specific areas. Sometimes participating in a single activity for a short or a long period of time can cause more damage and physical pain than you could ever imagine. Not to mention the recovery time, which can be intense. You can’t always read it on my face or in my body language. Also, chronic pain may cause secondary depression (wouldn’t you get depressed and down if you were hurting constantly for months or years?), but it is not created by depression.

Please understand that if I say I have to sit down/lie down/stay in bed/or take these pills now, that probably means that I do have to do it right now - it can’t be put off or forgotten just because I’m somewhere, or am right in the middle of doing something. Chronic pain does not forgive, nor does it wait for anyone.

If you want to suggest a cure to me, please don’t. It’s not because I don’t appreciate the thought, and it’s not because I don’t want to get well. Lord knows that isn’t true. In all likelihood, if you’ve heard of it or tried it, so have I. In some cases, I have been made sicker, not better. This can involve side effects or allergic reactions. It also includes failure, which in and of itself can make me feel even lower. If there were something that cured, or even helped people with my form of chronic pain, then we’d know about it. There is worldwide networking (both on and off the Internet) between people with chronic pain. If something worked, we would KNOW. It’s definitely not for lack of trying. If, after reading this, you still feel the need to suggest a cure, then so be it. I may take what you said and discuss it with my doctor.

If I seem touchy, it’s probably because I am. It’s not how I try to be. As a matter of fact, I try very hard to be normal. I hope you will try to understand. I have been, and am still, going through a lot. Chronic pain is hard for you to understand unless you have had it. It wreaks havoc on the body and the mind. It is exhausting and exasperating. Almost all the time, I know that I am doing my best to cope with this, and live my life to the best of my ability. I ask you to bear with me, and accept me as I am. I know that you cannot literally understand my situation unless you have been in my shoes, but as much as is possible, I am asking you to try to be understanding in general.

In many ways I depend on you - people who are not sick. I need you to visit me when I am too sick to go out… Sometimes I need you help me with the shopping, cooking or cleaning. I may need you to take me to the doctor, or to the store. You are my link to the normalcy of life. You can help me to keep in touch with the parts of life that I miss and fully intend to undertake again, just as soon as I am able.

I know that I have asked a lot from you, and I do thank you for listening. It really does mean a lot.

I just need to whine a little.

So, here's my official list of issues.  Ehler Danlos type III (hypermobility) with fibromyalgia, chronic common migraines, atypical bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and mild obsessive compulsive disorder. Comes complete with chronic fatigue due to non-REM sleep, moderate to severe osteoarthritis in my feet, ankles, knees, hips, spine and hands, and panic attacks. Whee!
So, I mentioned a little over a week ago that I’m technically allergic to my fentanyl patch, ‘cause I’m big time allergic to morphine, and that the itchies had been worse lately? My pain mgmt docs warned me that I might start having allergic breakthroughs, and if it happened, they would try and medicate me with something that would keep the allergic reactions in check while allowing me to maintain my fentanyl. Woke up yesterday and my right hip was super itchy. Hubby noticed me itching, and I asked him to look at my hip. Entire hip, up my back to my shoulder, and spreading past my spine to the other side I have broken out into large overlapping hives. So - took a benadryl yesterday every 4 hours. Last night before bed hubby asked how I felt, and I said it felt like the hives were there, but not as bad. He looked, and said they had greatly subsided, and looked like they were just under the skin, and in check. Woke up this morning. Hives are back, just as bad, and in a larger area over my back. Don’t want to take a benadryl, ‘cause I have to call the docs first thing when they open, and I want them to see the hives in their full glory. Sigh. I have to work at 1 today, ‘cause I had to switch my schedule around due to my getting my next set of facet injections on Wednesday. If I can’t get these hives under control without Benadryl, I can’t work, ‘cause it makes me really sleepy and scared to drive. I really don’t want to stop the fentanyl, it helps me so much.

On top of everything, my mom asked me to stop my and have Jeff help her move things around at her storage unit. I was helping, when I noticed my forearms getting pink, and told her I had to get out of the sun. After just 15 minutes, possibly less, in the sun, I now have two bright (and I mean BRIGHT!) pink arms, a pink triangle on my chest, and a pink face. I’ve been slathering with aloe and using my bactine spray to keep the pain down.

Okay life, I’ve had enough. Really, I’ll be good now, I promise. Can you stop please????

So, Monday they took me off the fentanyl.   I've been going through withdrawal, not too bad, but still.  I sat and bawled my eyes out twice today, because the pain is just so miserable.  I don't believe how much it helped.  Still on the benadryl.  Missed work Monday and Tuesday due to the allergy attack, had my facet injections yesterday on Wednesday, still in pain today.  Go to the pain mgmt doc's at 12:45 tomorrow, then to work for a 5 hour shift.  Jeff and I both believe that I'm pretty much done with working.  If I can last another week or two at the pain levels that I'm at, it will be a major event.

Sigh.  I hate this.  I hate whining.

Mom's home, and went for her first checkup today.  I was supposed to meet her, and just realized that the appt was an hour ago.  :headdesk:

She's feeling better, and seems to be progressing through her post op normally.  She's walking, and has completely quit smoking, which are two very positives.  However, the top of her incision site is, for lack of better words, bulging away from her chest.  Like, two to three inches higher than the rest of the incision.
I have to call and see what the doc said about that.

Another 5 weeks or so, and she starts cardiac rehab.  Hopefully she'll complete it, and things will continue to go well.

Thanks for all of your well wishes.....it really helped me to get through this!

Okay, I'm home from the hospital.
When they went into mom, they found 100cc of blood surrounding the heart, with no explanation for it.
They successfully replaced her aortic valve, and her single bypass.  However, when they tried to take her off bypass, her heart restarted, then started intermittently.  They had major problems getting her off the bypass machine, but in the end they were successful.  Problem:  when she went into the hospital last week, she apparently had another heart attack, with more muscle damage.  Second problem:  Her heart is only working at 33-35%.  Prior to the surgery, it was working at 50%.  The doctor is hoping - hoping - to get her heart back up to 50%.  Meaning, on oxygen and restrictions.  Not at all what we were hoping for.  Also, the next 24-48 hours is critical.  When my dad had a quad bypass, I don't remember them saying that??
Anyone have any insight here?

I'm working a 1/2 day from 12-5:30 tomorrow, going to see her in the am and then possibly after dinner tomorrow.
Updates to follow!

More Switch Witchery questions answered....again, if you've not familiar with the term, just ignore!!

***9/5***
Do you wear a watch? If so, what kind/style?
Yes; I have a gold bracelet watch by Seiko, that I’ve had for about 15 years, and just adore.

How do you feel about having a donation made in your name to something? If you like that idea, what types of organizations/groups would you want the donation to go to?
That would actually be a really lovely thought; I’d like it to go to the Ehler Danlos National Foundation

***9/4***
Do you have a case for your mp3 player/digital camera? If you would want one, what size is your digital device?
Yes, for my 2nd gen 8 gig non-video nano; however, I’d love more, especially one with a lanyard…and earphones, for that matter!! I tend to destroy them pretty easily. My nano is black, and my nano case is black leather with pink rhinestones embedded in it

For tea drinkers, do you bag it or prefer loose?
I drink it any way I can get it!

Does the weather change where you are, as in, does it get cold in the winter? Anyone need homegrown scarves, hats, mittens, etc?
Yes, we see winter here. I’m getting a brand new coat, a red one that I’ve been coveting for about 3 years now…..scarves and hats are the bomb!  Not mittens though….sorry, I’m just really picky about them….socks now, socks are a whole different addiction……

Who are your forum buddies? People you know well enough online or IRL to help your Witch pick out stuff for you?
Ummm….none? Anyone wanna change that?  There’s a few of you I’d love to meet in person…..

***9/3***
What manner of affordable Witchery might you covet?
Anything and everything! I love baked goods, I’d love one of those playlist thingies mentioned above, regifted books are good…..really, I’m easy!

Does your cell phone have a place to attach charms?
Yes, and the one I did have (a leather wristlet with BCA charms) broke…..so send them on!  The more the merrier!!

If you drink coffee (and make it yourself) do you use a French Press, regular filter basket coffee maker, Espresso Machine, Percolator?
I have a French Press that I can’t find, and a regular old filter basket coffee maker.  I do have a bean grinder, as well.

What movie soundtracks (or scores) do you love?
Many! I adore movie soundtracks!!  Valley Girl, RHPS, Footloose, Xanadu…..I’d love a copy of the Sound of Music, I don’t have that one yet.

How do you scent yourself? Do you layer soaps, moisturizers, etc. or do you go straight to slathering your bod with BPAL?
I prefer bathing items that aren’t heavily scented; Lotions can go either way.  I generally scent through BPAL or perfume…..

Do you/how do you scent your world? Candles, incense, diffusers, potpourri? None of the above?
Candles, melts and potpourri. I’d really love to find diffusers that work with BPAL, that would be the bomb!

BPAL is such a scent-ual experience. What are your other tactile, aural, or olfactory pleasures?
I’m extremely tactile; love different textures, but especially soft, thick ones….think heavy cashmere (not the tissue thin stuff), microfiber throws, down blankets (the thin ones with the satin edge binding)

***9/2***
How do people feel about receiving baked goods/kits to make said goods? Or other cooking items?
Yes, please! The more the merrier!!

Would you enjoy oil or vinegar flavored with herbs grown at home?
Yes!

Strange and exotic spices with recipes to try?
Oh!  I’d love this!!  We’re always experimenting……

Cookies made with carnation petals?
I’d love to try them!

What are your pet's names, and what are they named for?
Only one currently, a female blue pit bull called Ducati.  My DH named her after his motorcycle. I didn’t have a choice, I really wanted a puppy, and he was adamant about naming her.

***9/1***
Who here is a complete, over the top, Alice In Wonderland fanatic?
It’s been forever since I’ve read the story….I’ve always enjoyed it, but not so much a fanatic.

How do you like your mix CDs? Random? Stuff you know you'll like?
Pretty much anything, as long as I get a written playlist. I adore discovering new music.

Would you rather get food or jewelry?
Is both too greedy? Whatever my witch is comfortable with….

Do you like children's toys, such as jacks, those little things you tilt around to get the ball in the right hold (wtf are those called?), the aforementioned caplet dinosaurs, cap guns, etc?:
I’d either lose them, or my dog would eat them….so, thanks but no thanks.

English candy/tea/marmite or other stuff that you love and can't easily get outside of England?
Yes, I love discovering new things!  Especially scone related stuff….I adore lemon curd and clotted cream!

Any beaders here? Need beading supplies?
I just went through my drawer of beading….except for the actual beads, I’m pretty much set in the supply area.

Do you like making up your SW packages around a theme, or prefer to mix it all up?
Now, if I tell, it’ll give me away to my witchee!

***8/31***
How many of mah fellow witchies play video games? Platform? Do you like used games?
I need to buy one….we’re currently playing Guitar Hero III on a borrowed WII.

What kind of music (genres, please) do you like?
Pretty much anything except country, rap, and that screeching type of metal rock.

Have any of you ever received a book from a Witchy and loved it so much you ended up buying a copy for a later Witchee?
Not yet, but I’m sure it’s just a matter of time!!

Do you like lip balm? If so, do you like tinted, glossy, sparkly, pearly or just plain lip balm?
I use the Burts Bees original lip balm, and an indulgence of mine is the Chanel Glossimers.  I don’t expect any of those from my witch, as they are horrible expensive.

So, those of you who are not affiliated with my BPAL addiction may or may not care about the answers to the questions posted here, but I thought it would be fun!!

***8/29***
Where are a few of your favorite places?
The beach in winter, Jamaica, a good friends house, deep in the woods in the middle of summer with a cool breeze rustling the leaves and no other sounds, my favorite leather chair with my blanky and a book
Out of curiosity, all the fall babies who are celebrating their birthdays during the round - who are you, and when is your bday?
I fall just after this round again – November 9th!
What is one (only one) object that you collect, that totally goes against your personality or beliefs?
None. I’m pretty much open to everything, and everything I collect has deep personal meaning to me, even if it’s not apparent to others….
Are you a soap addict? Anything you like to avoid in soaps (goat's milk, lye, dyes, etc...) or any particular scents you like or brands you want to try?
More of a scrub addict than soap, but both are good!  See my SW help list for details there….
Do you like kilts and would you wear one?
Yes, and no – they belong on boys
BoiWitches? Question for you both.....Hath any of thou own a Kilt?
What's your favorite book?
Way too many to list here…..
What size socks do you wear? How about hat size?
I wear a child size 5 shoe; I can wear a women’s size 7, but they always are big on me.  Hubby found children’s socks last year and bought the largest children’s size, and they fit SO good!  Seriously, no extra toe room or nothing! I’d love hand knitted ones, or hand knitted slippers, or slipper socks….but, I don’t like toe socks.  Those are strictly for my DD. I’m really picky about my hats…..I have no idea what size I wear.
Do you read comics? Which ones do you love and which can't you stand?
I haven’t read comics in years, but I’m not opposed to reading any.  I’d love to read Watchmen, which is more of a graphic novel, as I understand it.
Symbols that are meaningful to me?
Dragonflies, celtic symbols, my wedding band
By nature are you a morning lark or a night owl?
Night owl, big time. Because of my job and my physical limitations, I flip between nights and days….
What's your favorite type of music to hear live, rather than recorded?
Any of my favorite bands….we go and see my hubby’s favorite band Aerosmith any time they are local, and I’d love to see Pat Benetar again, the B-52’s, Manhatten Transfer, and some others I can’t think of right now…..
What is your favorite autumnal-seasonal drink?
Spiced cider….yummmm……
***8/28***
Crossword puzzles? Other pencil puzzles?
I don’t get the whole Sudoku thing, but I do like crossword puzzles, and logic puzzles….
Favorite artist?
Don’t really have a favorite?  I like the fairies by Amy Brown and Nene Thomas, I like Monet, Picasso during his blue period, Arthurian pieces….
Favorite poet?
Merritt Malloy.  I don’t have any of her books, but I’d love some, especially her earlier works!
Halloween. Do you like it kooky or creepy?
Yes, please! I have a little of both, but mainly towards the kooky….more sweet Halloween, like I have two Boyd’s bears that decorate my table, a ghost candy dish, some Longaberger Candy Corn pieces…..but I like the spooky stuff for outside!
Reserved or Raunchy?
Dude, me raunchy?  Hee hee hee……..
Earth, Wind, Fire or Water?
Water, all the way…
Tea or Coffee in the morning?
OJ and possibly a cold iced mocha. I don’t do a lot of coffee ever, I drink tea pretty much all of the day
Fruity snacks or chocolate?
Chocolate, chocolate chocolate! I don’t do fruit, it’s too sweet for me.  I prefer rich to sweet….
Would you accept art?
Absolutely, with pleasure and much bragging rights!
Antiques or Brand New?
